Germany has been at the centre of Europe as an economic and political power for decades. Technological progress, social changes and economic developments have steadily changed the country‘s position in the globalised world. While Germany was regarded as Europe‘s industrial and economic powerhouse for decades, more recently there have been increasing voices warning of a loss of international competitiveness. We need to listen to these warnings, because Germany has never been in such a bad position for 50 years as it is today. The reasons for this are obvious: governments have done an inadequate job for decades and have failed to implement urgently needed reforms. Let‘s take a closer look and analyse how Germany has changed in recent decades - and why it is at risk of falling further behind in international comparison.
